Steel Pipe

Steel_Pipe
Steel pipe is one of the most common types of pipe that are used today. And are considered tubular goods, which are designed manufactured to various standards and specifications. You can find “nominal pipe sizes” ranging from just 1/8 inch up to 72 inches. The most common types of pipes are seamless and welded pipe. Both of these can be purchased in stainless and carbon steel. Check out our steel pipe size chart below!

Welded pipe is also referred to as ERW or Electric Resistance Welded pipe. Usually, the specification for this type of pipe is A53. For seamless pipe, the manufacturing process does not involve any welding. The most common specification for this type of pipe is A106B. With stainless steel pipe, the specification is A312 and you can find this type of pipe in welded and seamless configuration. For most stainless materials, you will find grades of 304 and 316.
Getting to Know the Different Types of Tubular Goods and Pipes
There are a total of six different types of tubular goods and pipes, which include:

  • Structural Tubing: This is used for retention or support purposes. The tubing can be square or round and are created by ERW manufacturing. These are used for construction, fences, and other types of miscellaneous support needs. Structural tubing represents about 15 percent of all the tubing goods sold today.
  • Standard Pipe: You can find three types of standard metal pipes, which include galvanized pipe, seamless pipe, and welded or ERW pipe. These represent approximately 10% of all the tubular products that are sold.
  • Mechanical Tubing: Designed for use in structural and mechanical applications and are produced by the ERW and by seamless manufacturing. These products conform to the ASTM specifications that are set. This type of tubing makes up approximately 17 percent of all the sold tubular goods.
  • Line Pipe: Mainly used for gas and oil applications, line pipe includes DSAW, SAW, FW, and ERW pipe. These are manufactured to the API 5L specifications.
  • Pressure Tubing: Designed for use in pressure and industrial applications. With pressure tubing, seamless manufacturing is used.
  • OCTG Oil Country Tubular Goods: Items included in this category are casing, tubing, and drill pipes. They are used in the drilling and the building of both oil and gas wells. You can find OCTG produced by seamless and ERW manufacturing.

Structural Pipe
Structural pipe is currently available for purchase in several grades and sizes. This means that it is a viable option for countless structural applications and uses. Some of the most common uses for modern structural pipe include pilings, structural supports, fencing, sign poles, bollards, columns, and more.
Put simply, structural pipe is a unique type of steel construction pipe that is designed to meet specific standards of mechanical properties and chemical composition. The pipe is used for all types of structural applications and there are different types of structural pipe available to choose from. Some of the most common options include:
  • ERW Steel Pipe
  • Seamless Steel Pipe
  • DSAW Carbon Steel Pipe
  • Spiral Steel Pipe
  • Fence Pipe
  • Culvert Pipe

If you need structural pipe for a job, project, or installation, purchasing it from a quality supplier is a must to ensure it can stand up to the elements and demands of the area where it is being installed.

ERW Pipe
EWR pipe, which actually means Electric Resistance Weld Pipe, is available in sizes that range from 1/8 to 24 inches in HPS. The ERW welded pipe is produced out of flat sheets of metal. To create it, the ERW pipe is cold formed into a cylindrical shape. At this point, it will be welded longitudinally. Electric resistance welded pipe and continuous welded pipe are designed by shaping various rolls of coiled steel. The steel is rolled into cylindrical forms. Once the right shape is achieved, it is welded along the longitudinal seams.

There are a few different ways that the electric current is used when welding a rolled strip. Usually, this involves the revolving copper disc, the induction coils, and the fixed alloy Cu. With these methods, it is possible to increase the steel edge temperature to 2600 degrees Fahrenheit, which make it effective for welding needs. The process used for rolling will exert so much pressure that it will create the seam on the inside and the outside. The seams will then be removed when the product is finished. At this point, the welded pipe will be heat treated, fully inspected, and they are hydro tested.

DOM Pipe
Another option you will find at a pipe supply near me is DOM or Drawn Over Mandrel piping. With this type of pipe, the manufacturing process is cold drawn 1020/1026 electric resistance welded tube and all the flash is removed before the cold drawing process. Compared to other types of tubing, DOM round steel tubing is designed to extract a higher level of ID and OD tolerances. It also has the highest level of weld strength that is available today.

The manufacturing process for DOM steel tubing starts with coils of steel. These are slit to the proper width to create the desired tube size, using steel pipe dimensions schedule 40 or steel pipe schedule 80. The strip with then be cold formed and sent through the electric resistance welder. This is when the edges are joined together, under high pressure, completing the pipe’s tubular shape. Once the integrity of the weld is tested, the tubing will be cut into the proper length for additional processing.

Steel Pipe Purchasing
If steel pipe is required for a jobsite or project you are handling, ensuring you buy from a quality company like Hamill Metals is a must. This will help ensure that quality materials are purchased and that the pipes in question will meet the needs of the project. Be sure to keep this in mind and learn more about the steel pipe options available with the information here. Being informed is the best way to ensure the right type of steel pipe is used for a specific job or application and that it can handle the pressure put on it.
