Z Purlin (Zed Purlin) Metal Beams
Z purlin gets its name from its z shape, as it is shaped like the letter z. This product starts out as a flat sheet of metal that is later shaped into the desired shape, which in this case is like the letter z. This item is a metal beam that combines a roof to the wall joist of a building. This beam sits between roofing materials and the building, in turn supporting both items and helping to hold everything in place. These are also used in areas that have high winds, because they strengthen the building and roof, and provide additional support for the framing bay spans.

Purlins come in other shapes a well, such as c purlins, which are also shaped like the letter that it is named after. Z purlins are strong, they’re lighter than some other materials like steel, and they can be an affordable option for building projects. This product can also be referred to as sheeting rails, and some builders use the two names interchangeably.

Thickness Options Available for Z Purlins
These z shaped beams are available in several thickness options, measured in gauges. No matter what the project is, there will be an appropriate thickness available for the job. The thicker the beam, the stronger it is. Thickness is available in the following for Z purlins:
  • 12 Gauge
  • 14 Gauge

How the Height is Measured
The heights for z purlin dimensions are measured in both millimeters and inches. There are charts out there that show the conversions for both. While specialized heights can be custom ordered from manufacturers, common heights include:
  • 121mm or 4.76”
  • 140mm or 5.51”
  • 175mm or 6.89”
  • 177mm or 6.89”
  • 175mm or 6.97”
  • 200mm or 7.87”
  • 235mm or 9.25”
  • 265mm or 10.43”

The Pricing for Z Purlins
Z purlin prices are based on both the length and the thickness of the metal piece. The more material that goes in to make the piece, the more manufacturers have to charge. Due to the fact that this product is widely available and can be affordable, people use these beams in everything from garages to storage sheds to homebuilding.

The Spacing for Z Purlins
Most people use z purlins in standard five-foot spacing increments, but this can change based on the needs of projects. For projects that will require the purlins to hold up a heavier than normal load, the spacing between the purlins will need to be decreased. Always consult an engineer or building specialist when designing the project to make sure it’s going to be safe, strong, and secure.

In conclusion, z type purlins are simply metal bars that are shaped into the letter z. They are strong, they can last a lifetime, and there are affordable options out there on the market. They come in an assortment of thickness and length options, and therefore can be used on many types and sizes of both residential and commercial projects.
